GServer: A Ruby library that makes developing network servers and services easy. It handles the thread and connection management and allows servers to be created by simply subclassing the GServer class. Daemon: A process that runs continually and silently in the background on a machine and isn t run directly by a user. Daemon processes are often used to run servers, as they run consistently without any interaction requirements on the local machine. In the next chapter, we re going to take a break from Ruby s various Internet- and network-related features and move to building basic GUI-based applications that work on your desktop (rather than from a command prompt).

o far in the book, we ve developed mostly command prompt level, textual applications. The focus has been on learning Ruby as a language, along with some of its libraries, so sticking to text- and network-based applications makes life a lot easier; these are the domains where Ruby is most effective. Recently, however, developers have begun to seriously look into using Ruby as a language for GUI- and desktop-based application development. In this chapter, we re going to look at how to build basic Ruby-powered GUI apps using Shoes, a very Ruby-focused desktop application toolkit, and then briefly look at several alternatives that you can choose to investigate further.

I ll start with a bold statement: Ruby is not known for being a good language in which to develop GUI applications. While it s been possible for years, the libraries available for building GUI apps have tended to be poorly maintained, leading to a chicken-and-egg problem for anyone seriously considering using Ruby to develop desktop applications. This is the most significant reason that GUI-based development wasn t covered at all in the first edition of this book. However, as of 2009 there are a few reasonable options for building reliable desktop applications in Ruby, and even though it s still not a popular use of Ruby generally, we re going to take a look at some of these options so that you can make up your own mind and, perhaps, help lead a new generation of Ruby-based desktop application developers!

It is important to be aware that compared to simply learning a programming language, as we have done so far in this book, learning how to develop GUI applications properly is a totally different ballgame! Proficient Ruby developers who are used to building web applications will not necessarily find desktop application easy (and vice versa). GUI development toolkits and libraries present complex APIs of their own.
