n this chapter, we re going to look at how to store, process, and interact with external sources of data from our Ruby programs. In 4, we briefly looked at how to load files to get data into an application, but this chapter will extend upon that greatly and allow you to create files from scratch from your Ruby programs. Later in this chapter, we ll look at databases specialized organizations of data and how to interact with them, along with some notes on interacting with popular database systems such as SQLite, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server. You can use databases for simple tasks such as storing information about a small set of items or as an address book, but databases are also used in the world s busiest data processing environments. By the end of this chapter, you ll be able to use databases the same way as, or at least in a similar way to, those used by professional developers around the world.

Interaction, in computer terms, relates to the input and output of data, or I/O for short. Most programming languages have built-in support for I/O, and Ruby s is particularly well designed. I/O streams are the basis for all input and output in Ruby. An I/O stream is a conduit or channel for input and output operations between one resource and another. Usually this will be between your Ruby program and the keyboard, or between your Ruby program and a file. Along this stream, input and output operations can take place. In some cases, such as when using the keyboard, only input can be retrieved, as you can t send data to a keyboard, and data can only be sent to, and not from, the screen. In this section, we re going to look at using the keyboard, using files, and other forms of I/O in Ruby and how they can be used.

Once the M file is saved, you re ready to deploy the model as a schema to SQL Server. In Quadrant, you are able to deploy the model directly to the SQL Server database without having to use the commandline tool set as you did in the last chapter. One of Shoes most compelling features is its packaging feature. Shoes can take your application and turn it into a distributable executable that will run on other people s machines, even if they don t have Shoes or Ruby installed. If you ve built a useful utility or a little game, this is a great opportunity to easily share your work with non-developers. The great thing is that it works on all of the major operating systems: Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. Shoes packaging feature is almost insultingly easy to use. Load Shoes in the usual way and choose the Package option from the main menu. You should see a dialog box somewhat like that in Figure 16-6.

The objects within a Canvas panel have no layout policies placed on them by the layout control and will not resize automatically when your application is resized within the browser.

The options presented in the Package dialog should seem straightforward. Firstly, you need to select the source file for your application. Then you can choose which operating systems to package your application for. Lastly, you can choose to have Shoes bundled with your application. This is so that people who don t have Shoes installed can run your application. Once you ve chosen the options you want, Shoes will estimate how big the resulting file will be, and you can click OK to get things started. Once Shoes has done the packaging, you ll be left with files you can distribute to people on the respective operating systems in order to be able to run your Shoes application.
